‘Twas the night before today
When all through the house, not a creature was stirring. Not even a mouse…
When I hear a thump followed by stomp stomp stomp. A door creaked open and then another. I realized at once what it could be. Mr. 3 was going to go potty!
He took his owl night-light, and went to the bathroom ALL BY HIMSELF. It was 1:48 AM, and I was as proud as could be. I got up to smile at him and ask if he needed help with anything. He was proud of himself, too.
This was the first time he has gotten up in the night to potty, and I hope he will feel comfortable enough to do it as much as he needs to.
He normally wets the bed between 2 and 4 times a week. My husband laments the amount of laundry caused by this, but I don’t want to make Mr. 3 wear pull-ups or diapers. He would take it as a sign of failure and regress over all, I am sure of it. Even now he sometimes spends half the morning acting like a “baby” after he has an accident. We struggled SO LONG getting him out of diapers that this is not a battle I want to fight. I can do the laundry.
I have 2 distinct memories of my younger self wetting my own bed. Considering that I only have a handful of distinct childhood memories, I am not afraid to say that I may have had a problem. Still, I was older than 3. I am not worried about Mr. 3 at all. I think it is normal to wet the bed. That is why we bought mattress protectors.
We spend a significant amount of time talking to him about going potty in the night. We remind him that he should be careful about drinking too much water, that he should go potty before bed, and that if he needs to go during the night he can call for help or go by himself.
Discussion: What do (or did) you do to help your kids make it through the night?
